Flower season on the farm

Suddenly I have a high schooler. The phrase “time is a thief” has been running through my head and boy does it feel so true. July seemed to fly by, and we are now in the midst of flower season! Everything is in full bloom and while it’s still a busy time harvesting and selling flowers, there’s also a calm (and relief) to see the beauty of it all. If you saw all the little baby plants during strawberry season, you’ll be amazed by what it’s all grown up to be. The best thing about flower season is it’s a longer season than strawberries—and a more manageable pace for us. We anticipate having flowers until a frost in late September or early October so there’s still plenty of time for you to enjoy the beauty of flower season.

You-Pick Flowers

If you enjoy visiting our farm, you-pick flowers is another great option! Walk amongst the beautiful flowers, pick the blooms that stand out to you and just relax on the farm. I truly believe our bodies need this time in nature and walking through the flower field listening to birds and bumblebees is a beautiful way to care for yourself.

We provide a paper cup for you to pick into so it fits nicely into your cup holder for the drive home. Clippers are available and we provide lots of information about how to cut the flowers so you can take home a beautiful bouquet.

Kids are welcome to enjoy the flowers as well! Or you can certainly encourage them to play in the playground while you stroll amongst the flowers if you need a little quiet time. 😉

Dahlias

Planting my dahlia garden next to our barn may have been my best decision of the year. It’s just sooooo beautiful. This spring I realized the number of dahlias I wanted to plant would not fit where I had intended. I need to find a spot and the old cattle yard seemed the most viable option. There was skepticism from my dad (because weeds, quack grass, so many unknowns) but I put down a silage tarp, killed it as best I could and said a little prayer as we put the tubers in the ground. Thankfully, the weeds were manageable, and the plants have loved the rich soil.

There are lots of beautiful flowers in the world, but dahlias are just one of those beauties that stands out above the rest.

Premium dahlias are featured in our dahlia subscription bouquets. The dahlias are also cut and available during our you-pick hours, or you can also find them in many bouquets at Blossom Town in Redwood Falls and other local floral shops!
