2025 Dahlia Tuber Sale is Open

Exciting news for our dahlia loving friends! As our flower business has grown and our dahlia field has expanded, so has the number of tubers produced by the plants. We now have enough tubers to add specialty dahlias to our you-pick field AND sell some of the tubers for your own gardens.

Some of the varieties that we are selling are most ideal in a garden setting, which is perfect for you!

Dahlia FAQs

What if I know nothing about growing dahlias?

Don’t worry! If you are just getting started with growing dahlias, we will provide instructions with your tuber. If you have a well-draining, sunny location in your garden, dahlias will like it.

Can I grow dahlias in a pot on my patio?

Yes! Dahlias can certainly grow in a pot if you don’t have a garden location for them. Many growers in locations with poor soil conditions only grow in pots or grow bags. Just make sure to choose a pot that will provide enough soil and stability for your plant and make sure it doesn’t get too dry during those hot summer days. I’d recommend choosing one of the varieties that only grows to about 3 ft tall (such as vixen, pictured at the top). When you shop the dahlias, click on the item to get a full description of each plant. You can certainly also try growing a taller variety in a pot, but it may not get as tall or you may want to add extra support with a tomato cage. Gardening is an experiment (which is one of the things I love about it) so give it a try!

What if I don’t want to dig up tubers in the fall?

In Minnesota, we have to dig up dahlia tubers because they don’t like to freeze. Some gardeners avoid dahlias because of that extra work of digging in the fall, but if you love the flowers, don’t let the tubers stop you. When my kids were little and time was short, I often left my dahlia tubers to die in the ground and started over the following year. That’s okay, too! I encourage you to try growing these beautiful flowers anyway and just consider it an “annual” flower.

I live close by—can I pick up my dahlia tubers and save on shipping?

Yes! If you are local and want to pick up your dahlia tubers, I’m happy to refund shipping costs after your tubers have been picked up. I will keep the tubers in storage until mid-April and then offer a few days to pick up tubers or will arrange a time that works for you.

My garden is still frozen, why are you selling the tubers now?

You’re right, it’s way too early to start planting, but it’s a great time to start planning your beautiful summer garden! We are selling the tubers now, so that we can get everything accounted for and shipped out (or picked up) with plenty of time for spring planting. Dahlias prefer to be planted mid-May or later when the ground is warm and all risk of frost has passed. Each garden is a micro-climate, so the perfect timing for planting will differ for each gardener.
